Use the Beta Site Now!

February 12, 2007 | Posted by Tom Werner

I’m up in San Francisco without decent internet access, so I wanted to get the beta out to my faithful readers.

You can use the beta right now at:

http://site.gravatar.com/

Send any bug reports or thoughts to tom@gravatar.com. Enjoy!

    Bug report:

It will not allow me to upload from my hard drive. Gives an error on any image type after upload.

I was able to upload via URL but then when it went to crop mode it kept throwing an error “80×80 is larger than 0x0 and that’s not going to fly”

Last but not least, gif transparency is lost after upload?

  2. Arjan Eising says:

For me it just worked fine 🙂 One note, the Gravatar logo on the bottom of the homepage…

  3. kainita says:

    Yuhuuuuuuuuuuu!!!!!!!!!!

  4. Miguel says:

YUPIII! Finally, the Gravatar’s blog is here!

    Waiting for centuries… lol

  5. Gaco says:

    Excellent!!…

  6. Bachi says:

    It works!! It works!!!

  7. Rosano says:

This is so confusing. Your interface links to options only available in a paid account even though I don’t have one. You should have a separate layout for people that can only have one email and gravatar at a time, which is most of us. The way it is now is going to be annoying for many people.

  8. malde says:

    works fine! great stuff 🙂

  9. Keith Petrus says:

Seems to be working great. Thanks for your hard work.

  10. twisted dog says:

Nice job! The interface is beautiful.

  11. Matt Oakes says:

Took me a while to find the delete button but it worked eventually.

  12. kate says:

    Hooray!

  13. Oscar says:

    Excelent job. Congrats!!!!

  14. caschy says:

    Yeeeessss!!!!!!!!

  15. Dave says:

    cool ::!!

  16. Jenn says:

Well, it let me upload a picture, but I couldn’t save it or anything. Site looks great though. Maybe I’ll try again…

  17. marcoss says:

    It was about time.

  18. Corinne says:

Fantastic, everything looks great so far.

  19. Luke says:

    Cool! It works!

  20. martin says:

hi… i can not assigen the gravatar to the email….

  21. Chris says:

Good to have you back, really missed Gravatar.

    Thanks for your good work.

  22. Tony2Nice says:

Sweet, everything went swimmingly. One thing, though: when it goes to the crop action for my image, it has a black background. But my image also has a black background, so I could hardly see what was going on. A small nitpick, sure.

    Glad to have you back!

  23. Mitchell says:

I can’t upload from my hard drive, I get errors. And when I upload from a URL, I get another error, but it says there’s a gravatar in my /emails thing. But it doesn’t show the picture of the actual avatar. Maybe I’ll try with a different browser (I’m using Firefox right now)

  24. Borghal says:

It worked like a charm with me. There are some minor adjustments needed; I’m sending those over the email. Good job, Tom!

  25. Red says:

Uhm… I don’t like the way to change avatar with free accounts. You have to un-register avatar, then you have to click on a cross that appaer on the icon when you go with the mouse on it, then yo have to upload a new image, then you have to activate it….

I think that the 50% of yoers of my blog will not be able to understant it… 😦

  26. Pendragon says:

Hmm… something I need to say something monumental… Mary had a little lamb…;)
Well, if Thomas Edison can get away with it.

  27. Alenônimo says:

That “pay for more” is annoying me. Why don’t you create another interface for free accounts, with messages offering better accounts instead of giving upgrade$ messages at “add more” links?

I don’t now… It seems like you’re deceiving users someway, or at least making the site “just for the money”. I won’t support Gravatar on my sites that way. 😦

If money is your problem, I hope Google buy your site soon. 😛

  28. Blui says:

Can you disable the “Upgrade Now for only $10 a year ” in the Beta-Version?

Otherwise we cant test the “more-mail/more-picture”-Version

  29. CHESHiRE says:

    Hello,

first time I recognized this Gravatar thing signing up was disabled. But I decided to wait because I wanted to know how it works. I looked forward to this day, signed up, made my gravatar. But ist doesn’t work. It doesn’t work even in my very own blog (wordpress).

The image URL that is returned by the gravatar() function links to that blue Gravatar logo. And the default picture I specified is not shown.

Well, maybe it does not work properly because it is currently a beta version. So I’ll still will look forward to…

Sorry if the English is that bad but it’s not my mother tongue. I hope you understand… 😉

  30. My gravatar won’t update. Damn!

  31. Yoshi says:

Sweet! Everything looks like it’s working, although I did have a problem uploading my avatar using firefox. :/

  32. Brotha says:

Ok, that’s great! But I have a doubt. My gravatar is there, under the e-mail address, but it does not appear in comments yet. Is that normal? Thanks.

  33. juncos says:

  34. Paul says:

  52. Leonardo says:

Great work!, worked like a charm in a WinXP + Firefox machine, one suggestion… state the “default” size for the gravatars (80×80 px) somewehere and when the user uploads a picture 80×80 skip the crop section.

  53. Livia says:

I, too get that Application error others get…. 😦

Like the others who couldn’t sign up, I’ve tried to sign up using IE, Firefox and Opera to no avail. But the new version’s set to be launched on 15 Feb 2007. Hope that by that time, signing up would already be a breeze.

    The site is down… 😥

  63. Daniel says:

  68. Tom says:

Thanks a lot ! Works great !!! Cool to have gravatar back …

  69. Malin says:

Nice beta! I understand that you want to limit the amount of gravatars in a free account but as of now you can get around it but pressing the back button in your browser and upload another one (by this I mean from a URL and not from the hard drive, haven’t tried that) and another one and so on….
I have now 6 gravatars in my account… So you might want to look in to that…

  70. Ike says:

Hey Tom… just as an aside:

Where can you be in San Francisco and NOT have decent internet access?

  71. Enrique says:

Just signed. Waiting for my link to set my gravatar….

This version rocks! Thanks! Works fine except for my newly changed avatar that won’t appear on websites: the old one remains…

  75. wites says:

I love the interface and all but i guess the most important upgrade would have been avatars showing up where it should be.

  76. sumomo-3- says:

    Yeah~ Finally, it opened!

  77. Federico says:

    Realmente funciona?

  78. Lily says:

  88. Paul Irish says:

$3 a year would be a lot more enticing. Or at least run a promotion. $10 is unrealistic for an icon.
